Debate One
Every painting in Chronicle of an Unquiet Age documents the defining events, people, and issues that shaped its moment in history. Created in real time as events unfolded, each work serves as both an original oil painting and a historical record, reflecting the belief that the news of today is the history of tomorrow.

The fifteenth work in the Vision 2020 series captures the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, held on September 29, 2020 in Cleveland, Ohio. Chris Wallace from Fox News was the Moderator and was marked by sharp exchanges, frequent interruptions, and immediate public reaction. The event quickly became one of the most memorable debates in modern political history.
Portraitsof Biden and Trump in the boxing ring features the debate-stage imagery, move like live television captions, reflecting clashes over the economy, COVID-19, race relations, law enforcement, and election integrity. The imagery suggests a nation watching not only two candidates, but two competing visions of reality and leadership.
This painting preserves the tense atmosphere of that evening—frustration, urgency, spectacle, and disbelief all at once and it records a debate that revealed just how polarized and combustible American politics had become in 2020.
