The Supreme Fight

Every painting in Chronicle of an Unquiet Age documents the defining events, people, and issues that shaped its moment in history. Created in real time as events unfolded, each work serves as both an original oil painting and a historical record, reflecting the belief that the news of today is the history of tomorrow.

TRTA-2020-014 | September 2020 | Oil on Canvas | 34" x 26"

The fourteenth work in the Vision 2020 series captures the political battle that followed the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the nomination process that quickly followed. Arriving in the final weeks before the presidential election, the vacancy transformed the Supreme Court into one of the most contested arenas of American politics.

Portraits of Ginsberg, Nominee Amy Coney Barrett  with commentary from Lindsey Graham Mitch McConell and Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are featured like breaking news coverage, reflecting arguments over constitutional authority, election-year precedent, judicial philosophy, and the future balance of the Court. References to Amy Coney Barrett, Senate leaders, and partisan reaction reveal how the nomination became inseparable from the larger campaign.

This painting preserves the atmosphere of September 2020, when grief, strategy, celebration, and outrage unfolded simultaneously. As a historical time capsule, it records how one judicial vacancy became a defining political struggle in an already turbulent year.
