The Last Debate

Every painting in Chronicle of an Unquiet Age documents the defining events, people, and issues that shaped its moment in history. Created in real time as events unfolded, each work serves as both an original oil painting and a historical record, reflecting the belief that the news of today is the history of tomorrow.

TRTA-2020-017 | October 2020 | Oil on Canvas | 34" x 26"

The seventeenth work in the Vision 2020 series captures the final presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, held on October 22, 2020 held in Miami, Florida and Moderated by NBC's Kristen Welker in the closing days of a deeply divided election season. Following the disorder of the first debate, this encounter was more controlled with the now famous "Mute" Button, yet no less consequential, as both candidates made their final direct appeal before voters cast their ballots.

Tony Bobulinski, former business associate of Hunter Biden holds a presser confirming documents sand emails were real on Hunter's "laptop from hell". Images on the painting reflect clashes over the economic recovery, healthcare, race relations, foreign policy, and accusations of corruption. The imagery suggests that debates had become not only policy forums, but cultural events instantly judged through media reaction and partisan interpretation.

This painting preserves the atmosphere of tension, anticipation, and urgency that marked the final weeks of the campaign. It records the last face-to-face confrontation before one of the most consequential elections in modern American history.
